- U.G. -- What’s good? Tell everybody out there how long ya’ll been grinding in the rap game, because a lot of up and coming artist do not know how much work Identical has put in.
SJ -- We been recording and doing shows since around 1991 or 1992. We were a lot of people’s first look at what Inkster had to offer as far as talent went in those days. We were young on the stage and we had to earn respect. We come from an era of rap when you had to put in real work, and get out and go make a name for yourself.
AJ -- The grind has been the best part of the process to me, it's been a few years out here putting in the work.
- U.G. -- What do you think is the secret to lasting long in a game where every day a star is born?
SJ: Well if we told you that, then it would not be that much of a secret would it. To me the only stars are in the SKY!!!!
AJ: Staying true to who you are and not being fake with it, it's a lot of fakers in the game. We never have a problem looking in the mirror in the morning because we are true.
- U.G. -- Last night I was at a strip club in Detroit with some members of the street team, and heard ya’ll hit single “Fannin’ Wit Da Money” played about eight times. Was the strip club apart of the creative process while coming up with that song concept?
SJ -- Not really, Tweet (The president of Neighborhood Music) was the one who got the song played in the strip club. We took it up there, the dj liked it and played it, and then the dancers started to request it. But the creative process was just getting the concept and then writing about how it be when you getting that money, you wonna act a fool with it, so start “Fannin Wit Da Money”
AJ -- Another part of the process, staying out there with the hits.....Even the haters really love IDENTICAL...
- U.G. -- Years ago two of Detroit hottest groups reportedly turned down multi-million dollar major deals to stay independent. The talk is Identical also turned down major labels for the indie route. So besides the extra dollars off the cd’s why would ya’ll turn down an opportunity a lot of artist would die for?
SJ -- WE ARE SELF MADE, that’s why. Everything that glitters ain’t gold, and a lot of what you see is false. So why would we play our self just so we can say we have a record deal. Neighborhood Music is ours, and we call all the shots so win, lose or draw, we roll with what we like and how we feel things should go. NO BODY OWNS US!!!
AJ -- It's a difference when you are sitting at the table with the bosses and sitting at the table as a boss. We just chose the latter, we come correct so they have to as well……
- U.G. -- Does Identical have any regrets about the decisions ya’ll have made in the past or present in regards to the music business that you wish you could do over?
SJ -- Nope, none at all. Part of being a man is living with the choices and decisions you make. We are much more than just rap music, IDENTICAL is a brand and we will never go back on anything we do or say.
AJ -- No regrets, the only way to learn is to live and we live learn and teach all the time.
- U.G. -- What Rappers or producers outside of the Mid West would you like to work with in the future?
SJ -- It’s really too many to name, so I will just say we wonna work with all the people that wonna work with us. If the producers is bringing that heat and we can zone out to it let’s work, if the rappers or artist are coming with good concepts and songs lets work!!!
- U.G. -- As far as perception is concerned when it comes to rap music the south is where it’s at. All the artist feature on each other’s projects like one big movement. Why is it hard for rappers in the Mid West area to come together and shut the game down?
SJ -- I don’t think it’s hard; you have to pay attention to what’s going on out here in these streets. A lot of artist from the Mid West are hooking up, the thing is a lot of the public are not into those artist yet so they are not seeing that take place, but the Mid West will have it’s day again. You have to think about artist like Bone, Em, Esham, ICP, Kid Rock. All of those artists are from the Mid West and they all have the highest selling albums in there genre of rap, so our numbers as a region stay out doing all the others.
- U.G. -- What’s next for Identical?
SJ -- Well right now we are pushing our new website www.moreidentical.com It’s the best artist sites on the whole internet. It has our web based reality show ‘Interstate Identical” on there and all our new music and videos. We are also working with super producer KIDD, he just produced “Lose Control” the remix featuring Vina Mills, and as of 11-29-09 is the NUMBER 1 record on “what the fuck radio” out of Cleveland , Ohio .
AJ -- We gat a few tricks up our sleeves, you never know……
Even though Mr. Rain was unavailable for comment due to his prison being on lock down, you guys are all he talks about so on behalf of him and the whole UG staff we would like to thank you guys for holding our CEO down and helping out the UnitedGrind.com movement
AJ -- Fa Sho….Yall know IDENTICAL is going to hold Mr. Rain down….. www.moreidentical.com
